week four update

Kevin Jones finally breaks out! With a favorable schedule he should continue to be a solid play. Kitna is competent but small and the Lions know that they have got to keep defenses off him. A balanced attack wins games.

Roy Williams will continue to be a solid play. Corey Bradford has fallen out of favor. Mike Williams is starting to come on. M.W. is saying the right things to the press and the coach likes him.

I can't figure why Bradford isn't stepping up but it kind of figures as he came from a loser where he underperformed. He seems to be skating on talent and collecting a check.

If Mike Williams steps up and takes over the #2 it will make him valuable and solidify Roy Williams.

Watch if the team picks up Darius Watts he could be a factor in the second half.

Neither the defense, tight end nor kicker are worth picking up here.

91. Jon Kitna

Pick him.

Grab him at the end because Detroit has a lot of talent, an easy schedule and, finally, the right coach.

Early quarterback picks in the draft are proven, once again, to be the ultimate lottery. Careers can be ruined, reputations destroyed, especially since so much invested money, means they must hold onto an under-performer too long.

I'm a firm believer that the position player with the greatest impact and longer career should be taken first. In retrospect, is there a better choice for #1 in '05 then Shawne Merriman?

Kitna has a fire burning inside him. He has proven over and over again that he has what it takes to lead a franchise. He's finally in a place where he can really be appreciated and if he proves it once again, then he will have a home to cement a legacy.

A strong veteran leader is exactly what this team has needed.

Yes, he's small, but, he more than makes up for it in heart. Marinelli will bring discipline and Martz a Superbowl winning, offensive scheme.

With the softer schedule that Detroit has, Kitna could put up some great numbers and give Detroit a solid season.

44. Roy Williams

Watch out for the gathering buzz, believing in it could backfire.

Detroit was an awful team.

Granted Mike Martz has a tremendous reputation and has been handed a cornucopia of first round talent. It is up to him to whip up a thanksgiving feast!

And he could do it. If he does, Williams will lead the charge.

I'm a Kitna believer! If only he were a little taller, you know, like Flutie.

Kitna is an excellent field general and he can throw. He ratchets up the value of this offense tremendously. He was valuable in Seattle and kept Palmer's seat warm with controversy in Cincinnati.

Yesterday, I read that even Charles Rogers is looking good to start opposite Williams. Hold the fantasy presses Margaret!

Rogers? The guy that got drafted so many times only to sickeningly crack his collarbone and crush many fantasy hearts! That Rogers!

If this is true, and his skeleton holds up, then who cares about a disaffected child like Mike Williams. Hell, Corey Bradford is awesome and looking for a chance to make a name for himself.

Kevin Jones can be a stud, and, the schedule isn't too tough, I'm projecting an 0-5 start, but, if they could actually win a few early; say 3-3, and then a few more, you could be looking at some very positive momentum building into a dangerously underrated foe!

Of course they still may have a couple games where they don't score, after all, Chicago is on the schedule twice, as well as visits from Seattle, Atlanta, Miami, and, visits to St. Louis, New England and Dallas. Oh, those rascally schedule makers, they sure know how to kick a team when their down. (Have you seen New Orleans'!)

A new discipline is in Detroit and having the right Williams on your roster could help you tremendously. It looks good for him to be a mid to late draft pick-up, that will do better then any of those possession receivers that are scattered all over the bottom of the draft board.

It is always a good thing to have the primary receiver on a team, especially if he was a first rounder, is in his 'breakout' third year, and was 18th with 59 points and a strong finish in '05 and looking to move up.

Just make sure you call out the right Williams!

34. Kevin Jones

Detroit plays in a soft division, and, they are a big part of the reason why. As much as I want to buy into the new coaching staff and on-field personnel, there is still a lot of work here to do. In looking at their first games it seems to me that an 0-5 start is a very real possibility.

They have no chance at a division title or the playoffs. This is a rebuilding year.

Jon Kitna is a huge bright spot. Teams will have to out-point the Lions. Kitna is a very competent talent, he's just too small and too old, at this point, for a franchise quarterback. He may not be able to beat you, but, he can bring the hurt; especially with a cadre of first round receivers and a runningback, that would love to be a star.

I think that Kitna brings competency to this team.

Kevin Jones is not a first or second round pick. He will probably be taken there. Add him to your cannon fodder list and consider taking him in the fourth or fifth round. I see him as a third runningback and a quality gamble at something special.

Detroit may still have games where they wont score at all, and this hurts. There is a reason that top players come from playoff teams.

Jones couldn't seem to break through the mediocrity barrier in Detroit and actually regressed in his second year. Bad teams tend to have a losing virus that infects everyone. (We'll see if Bush is immune to this.) A better back would have exploded, regardless. I project about 1100 yards and 6 touchdowns.

He's here on the list solely because of Kitna and all the hope wrapped around the new regime. He's also placed here because of the scarcity of runningbacks at this point.

Jones worked hard in the off-season and is very committed.

If your sitting on two receivers and a quarterback then he is a clear starter. With a new attitude this could be his year.

Still, with all the receiving talent at Kitna's fingertips, Detroit might mimic Arizona last year and that would spell disaster for Jones.

On the other hand, if Martz utilizes Jones newly developed pass catching skills and molds him into a Marshall Faulk style of weapon, then the inexperience in the passing attack may allow Jones to end up as the focal point of the scoring offense.

Hard to see this happening with Roy Williams and Charles Rogers on board, but, it does make Jones an intriguing pick for this year.
